'Bewitched' Is Getting a Reboot With One Massive Change

Let’s face it—TV reboots aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Last season, we saw the triumphant return of shows like Will & Grace and Roseanne, while this year brought us Last Man Standing. But these aren’t the only kinds of reboots happening. There are also those that take the original concept and breathe new life into it with updated premises and fresh casts, like Hawaii 5-0, MacGyver, S.W.A.T., and this year’s Magnum, P.I. and Charmed. Now, there’s exciting news for fans of one of the most iconic sitcoms from the 1960s: Bewitched is getting a reboot. This beloved show, which still enjoys a loyal fanbase in reruns, is set to charm audiences once again with a modern twist.

The heart of the original Bewitched lies in its enchanting premise. On her wedding night, Samantha Stephens (played by the legendary Elizabeth Montgomery) reveals to her new husband, Darrin (Dick York), that she is, in fact, a witch. Initially feeling betrayed, Darrin eventually realizes that his love for Samantha runs deeper than any magic spell. Together, they attempt to settle into a normal domestic life—a task that proves easier said than done. From 1964 to 1972, Samantha promised not to use her powers, but circumstances often forced her hand, whether it was dealing with her eccentric family members like her mother, Endora (Agnes Moorehead), or her mischievous cousin, Serena (also played by Elizabeth Montgomery). Along the way, Samantha and Darrin welcomed their children, Tabitha (Erin Murphy) and Adam (Greg and David Lawrence), adding even more magical chaos to their lives.

A Modern Twist on Classic Charm

The new version of Bewitched, which has been greenlit for a pilot by ABC, is being crafted by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and writer/producer Yamara Taylor. In this iteration, Samantha remains a witch, but she’s now a hardworking single mother who marries Darrin, a white man with a more laid-back lifestyle. As Deadline describes it, the series will explore the couple’s struggles to navigate their differences, highlighting the reality that even when a black woman possesses magical abilities, she still faces systemic challenges in America. This modern take promises to bring the timeless themes of the original show into the present day, addressing issues of race, identity, and equality with wit and heart.
