Let’s talk about Catherine Zeta-Jones, shall we? The 49-year-old has been in the entertainment spotlight for a long time, reaching her peak when she won an Oscar for her incredible performance as Velma Kelly in Chicago. But these days, much of the chatter revolves around her enduring marriage to the legendary actor Michael Douglas, who is 74 years old. Now, despite Michael giving Catherine plenty of reasons to throw in the towel, she’s stuck by his side. Recently, Catherine opened up to The Times about why she’s remained committed to this long-term relationship.
A Love Story That Withstood the Test of Time
It all began with a bold move by Michael Douglas. Back when Danny DeVito introduced Catherine to Michael, the first thing he said to her was, “I’d like to father your children.” Can you imagine that? And guess what? That was two decades ago. Flash forward to last week, and the couple celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary. But let’s not kid ourselves—this journey hasn’t been without its fair share of challenges. “God knows we’ve had ups and downs in our marriage,” Catherine admits candidly. “But I don’t throw the towel in very quickly on anything. I’m not that person. Not that I would white-knuckle it until the day he drops dead. Or the day I drop dead, I’m not that stupid, either.”
Staying Committed Through Thick and Thin
Now, when Catherine talks about "ups and downs," she’s referring to everything from Michael’s infamous claim that his throat cancer was caused by too much cunnilingus to the time he faced a #MeToo allegation. But Catherine believes that people give up on marriage far too easily these days. “I know it’s an old-fashioned way of thinking, but you’ve got to give it your best shot,” Catherine explains. “I have a temper and a knee-jerk reaction. Michael calls me Dame Doom because I’ll go to the worst-case scenario. I’m like a Formula One race car—zero to 200 in two seconds. I spend my life trying to bring it down.”

Let’s rewind to January, when a former employee accused Michael of sexual harassment. What was Catherine thinking then? Well, here’s what she had to say: “My children and I were profoundly devastated by those allegations. And I was torn about where my absolute morals lie. This woman came out of nowhere and accused my husband. I had a very serious conversation with him, with the kids in the room, and said, ‘Do you understand if more comes out…’”
