There’s nothing quite like the magic of the holiday season, especially when you’ve got little ones to share it with. For John Legend, this time of year brings an extra special joy—thanks in large part to his adorable children, Luna and Miles. The legendary singer recently opened up about how the holidays have changed for him over the years, comparing his own childhood celebrations to the way he and wife Chrissy Teigen now celebrate with their two kids.
“It’s hard to even imagine what it’s like to be a kid like my kids are today,” John told Heat magazine, referring to his daughter Luna, who’s two, and son Miles, who’s just five months old. “Growing up, my experience was so different.”

From Humble Beginnings to Holiday Magic
John’s childhood was shaped by the values of hard work and modesty. “My parents were working-class folks,” he explained. “My dad worked in a factory, and we didn’t have much money. We couldn’t afford extravagant gifts or massive holiday celebrations. For us, Christmas was all about family, music, and food. It wasn’t about material things at all.”
Fast forward to today, and John finds himself navigating a completely different world as a father. “It’s strange raising kids who are having such a different experience,” he admitted. “They’re surrounded by privilege and wealth, and they don’t want for anything. It’s tough to figure out how to approach Christmas with them.”

Keeping It Real for the Holidays
Despite their status as A-list celebrities, John and Chrissy are determined not to let their kids grow up spoiled. “We don’t need to go overboard with Christmas,” John said. “They get so many gifts already because brands are always sending us free stuff. Every day, there’s something new arriving at our door. A lot of it, we end up giving away. We don’t want to spoil them any more than they already are. We’re just trying to keep things normal.”
Of course, when your dad is an EGOT-winning artist with his own Christmas TV special, “normal” might look a little different. But what’s truly heartwarming is how John and Chrissy are instilling values of gratitude and humility in Luna and Miles, ensuring that the holiday spirit is about more than just presents under the tree.
Looking Ahead to the Future
As John and Chrissy continue to build their family, they’re committed to creating a balanced environment where their children can appreciate the joy of giving and spending time together. Whether it’s through music, food, or simply being present with loved ones, the Legends are making sure their kids experience the true meaning of the holidays.
