Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson tied the knot in 1994 and were blessed with two sons, Micheál and Daniel Neeson, who is now 22. The Daily Mail reports that Micheál's decision to change his surname was an act of love and admiration for his mother. It had nothing to do with distancing himself from his father, a globally recognized actor.

“This wasn’t because he wanted to avoid his father’s fame, which is enormous. He wanted to hold his mother close to him — because she was a remarkable actress. Absolutely remarkable,” shared Micheál’s grandmother, Vanessa Redgrave, in an interview with the Daily Mail.
A Journey Through Grief
Micheál, currently a student at Tulane University in New Orleans, opened up in a past interview about his struggles following the loss of his mother. He described hitting "rock bottom" and shared his journey of healing. "In my mind, subconsciously, I either pushed it out or stored it deep inside. And so, within the next week, I was like, ‘Okay, on with my life,’” he confided to the Sunday Times.
He continued, "Things just started going downhill. The people I was with, we were partying a lot. It was dark. I hit rock bottom. Everybody said, ‘This kid has lost his mum, that’s where the problem comes from.’ And I was like, ‘No, it isn’t, I just like to party.’ But looking back, I realize it was a delayed reaction. Grief has a way of catching up with you, and I'm learning to navigate it better now," he reflected.
