Though she passed away at the age of 85 in 2014, Shirley Temple’s legacy continues to shine brightly. On Monday, April 23, her children and devoted fans gathered in Los Angeles to celebrate what would have been her 90th birthday. Her daughter, Susan Black, opened up to Closer Weekly about her beloved mother, who spent most of her life as a licensed interior decorator. "We threw so many parties," Susan reminisced fondly. "Mom was all about creating joy and memories, whether it was through her work or simply being with family."
Shirley Temple: More Than Just a Movie Star
Shirley wasn’t just a Hollywood icon; she was a devoted wife and mother who approached her domestic responsibilities with the same dedication she brought to her acting career and later as the U.S. Ambassador. "Decorating our home was one of her favorite things," Susan shared. "We had a blast transforming the dining room into something special. It wasn’t just about design for her—it was about creating spaces where we could all come together and enjoy each other’s company."
Shirley took immense pride in balancing her various roles in life. "Being a wife and mom was, hands down, her greatest achievement," Susan explained. "She wasn’t just my mom; she was my shopping buddy, travel companion, and one of my very best friends. We went on countless adventures together, and every moment with her felt like a gift."

Growing Up with a Legend
For Shirley's children, growing up with such a celebrated figure wasn’t always obvious. "It seemed pretty normal to us," her son, Charles Black Jr., recalled. "The only times I really noticed her star quality was when someone asked her for an autograph. She was just so down-to-earth and amazing in every way." In a past interview with Closer Weekly, Charles Jr. elaborated on what life was like with their famous mom. "She was wonderful—and normal. We sat down at the dinner table together every single night as a family."
"Mom was incredibly devoted and generous, but she also had a firm hand if we didn’t behave," Susan added. "Yet, she was always fun, inventive, and imaginative. Everything she did revolved around her family and her husband. She was truly the heart of our home."
