David Bowie's Magic Touch: NYC Subway Gets A Starry Makeover

New York Subways Are Trash But These David Bowie Metrocards Are Good

Hey there, folks! Let’s talk about the legendary David Bowie and how his timeless legacy is making waves in the Big Apple. Picture this: New York City commuters, who are always under pressure, now have a little bit of Bowie magic to brighten their day. Starting this week, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is distributing 250,000 special MetroCards, each adorned with images of the iconic singer. These cards are a tribute to Bowie, who tragically left us in January 2016.

These Bowie-themed MetroCards are more than just a ticket to ride—they’re a celebration of the exhibit "David Bowie Is," currently on display at the Brooklyn Museum. The cards are being handed out randomly at two iconic subway stations in Manhattan: Broadway-Lafayette and Bleecker St. Each card showcases one of five striking images from the exhibition, capturing different phases of Bowie's illustrious career. From the Thin White Duke to Ziggy Stardust, and even Aladdin Sane, these cards honor the man who was truly an otherworldly star.

Bowie and Spotify: A Collaboration for the Ages

This project is a collaboration between the Brooklyn Museum and Spotify, the music streaming giant. Together, they’ve transformed the Broadway-Lafayette station into a Bowie wonderland. The walls are adorned with massive photos of Bowie, giving commuters a glimpse into his life in New York City. There’s even a map highlighting some of his favorite Greenwich Village spots, like the former location of Looking Glass Studios. Spotify has also added QR codes that link users directly to audio files of Bowie’s music, making it easy for fans to dive deeper into his world.

Spotify explains in a press release, “The intricate details that make up the subway takeover speak to key moments in Bowie’s New York City history, many of which were in the neighborhood surrounding Broadway-Lafayette, where he spent over two decades.” They go on to describe how Bowie’s experiences in the city shaped his artistry, from legendary performances at Carnegie Hall to recording sessions at iconic studios like Electric Lady and the Magic Shop. It’s a tribute not just to Bowie, but to the city that inspired him.
