Hey there! You know those friendships that just light up the room? Well, Dr. Mehmet Oz and Katie Couric have one of those. In an exclusive chat with Closer Weekly, Dr. Oz opened up about their incredible bond, and it’s clear that Katie has left an indelible mark on him since their days on the Today show together.
Back in the day, before Dr. Oz became the household name we all know, he was a professor at Columbia University, moonlighting as a surgeon. But when he ventured into the world of television, Katie was right there, welcoming him with open arms. “Katie has always inspired me,” Dr. Oz reminisced at the NYC premiere of her new National Geographic series, held at the Titus Theater at the Museum of Modern Art last week. “Even before I did television, I’d go on the Today show with her and Matt Lauer, and we’d experiment with robotic devices. I’d show them how new technologies worked, and she was always a joy to engage with. Katie has this unique ability to make you feel like you’re the most interesting person in the room.”
A Look Back at Their Early Days

Dr. Oz shared how Katie played a pivotal role in his transition into the world of television. “I was nobody back then—I was just a professor at Columbia, but Katie nurtured me and made me feel like a million bucks,” he continued. “She has this incredible ability to read people so well, and it makes it so easy to connect with her. She’s such a talented woman, and that’s something you can’t teach.”

Supporting Katie’s Latest Adventure
Because of their deep bond, Dr. Oz was thrilled to support Katie’s latest venture into the world of documentary filmmaking. “Katie is a dear friend, and I’m genuinely proud of her for taking on topics that are so divisive and challenging in today’s climate,” he gushed. “She’s diving headfirst into issues that spark so much debate, and she’s doing it with grace and empathy.”
According to the event press release, in this six-part documentary series, America Inside Out With Katie Couric, Katie invites her audience to hear directly from Americans who are dealing with real-world challenges. The hope is that viewers will develop a deeper understanding of the issues that seem to be tearing our nation apart. The series airs on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. EST on the National Geographic channel.
