Is Netflix Picking up Roseanne? Streaming Service Slams Canceled Show

Alright, let’s get real here. After ABC decided to pull the plug on the Roseanne reboot due to Roseanne Barr’s deeply offensive tweet, the small group of die-hard fans left standing were desperate for someone—anyone—to pick up the show. Rumors started swirling that Netflix might step in and save the day. But guess what? Netflix wasn’t having it. In fact, they served up a pretty clever response with one sharp tweet.

Netflix’s Take on the Situation

Instead of welcoming Roseanne into their lineup, Netflix decided to pivot and promote another series that they believe better represents the values of today’s world. They compared Roseanne to their own critically acclaimed show, One Day at a Time. This sitcom, which focuses on a tight-knit, working-class family, tackles real-world issues with heart and intelligence. Netflix made sure to remind everyone that if you're looking for a show about a family dealing with modern social challenges, you don’t need the Conners—just meet the Alvarez family.

What Happened with Roseanne Barr’s Tweet?

It all started when Roseanne Barr fired off a racially insensitive tweet comparing President Barack Obama's senior advisor, Valerie Jarrett, to a character from Planet of the Apes. By the time most people woke up, the damage was already done. ABC wasted no time in making their decision. Channing Dungey, the president of ABC, issued a strong statement condemning the tweet and announcing the cancellation of the reboot, which had just been renewed for a second season. The message was clear: this kind of behavior has no place on their network.

Roseanne Barr’s Apology and Explanation

Roseanne, who is 65 years old, later issued an apology for her actions. She even tried to shift the blame onto the sleeping medication Ambien, claiming she was unaware of what she was doing at the time. Her apology was heartfelt, but it also came with a warning: don’t defend her. In her own words, she admitted that her tweet was unforgivable and that she didn’t want anyone to make excuses for her. Here’s what she said: “Don’t feel sorry for me, guys!! I just want to apologize to the hundreds of people, and wonderful writers (all liberal) and talented actors who lost their jobs on my show due to my stupid tweet.”

She continued, “Guys I did something unforgivable so do not defend me. It was 2 in the morning and I was Ambien tweeting — it was Memorial Day too — I went [too] far and do not want it defended. It was egregious Indefensible [sic]. I made a mistake I wish I hadn’t but… don’t defend it please.”

Roseanne added, “Hey guys, don’t defend me, it’s sweet of you 2 try, but… losing my show is 0 compared 2 being labeled a racist over one tweet — that I regret even more.” So, while she expressed regret, it seems like the final chapter for both the show and its creator has been written.
