“One day, you might hear or read that I’ve passed away. Don’t believe it for a second,” said Billy Graham, the beloved evangelist known as America’s Pastor. “In reality, I’ll be more alive than ever. I’ll just have moved my address to heaven, to be in the presence of God.” When Billy Graham passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on February 21, his daughter Ruth Graham, 67, echoed his sentiments with heartfelt words to Closer Weekly. “This is truly a glorious day. My father is finally free,” she expressed, capturing the spirit of celebration rather than sorrow.
A Simple Farewell for a Humble Man
As the world mourned the loss of this spiritual giant, plans were set in motion to lay Billy Graham to rest on March 2 at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, North Carolina. He would be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Ruth Graham, who had passed away in 2007. The simplicity of the funeral arrangements reflected the humility that defined Billy Graham’s life. His casket, described by his son Franklin Graham as “a simple plywood casket like my mother’s,” was crafted by convicted murderers at Angola Prison. This poignant choice symbolized forgiveness and redemption, values that Billy Graham championed throughout his ministry. The family had previously supported the prison by donating funds to build two chapels, places where Billy himself had preached to inmates, offering them hope and a second chance.

A Life That Touched Many
Televangelist Joel Osteen described Billy Graham to Closer as “humble and gracious,” qualities that resonated deeply with those who knew him. In the days following Billy’s death, a flood of memories poured in from family, friends, and followers, each sharing how Billy had touched their lives. Franklin Graham, 65, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support the family received during this time. “As we travel from Asheville to Charlotte via the motorcade with my father, the outpouring of love is truly overwhelming,” Franklin shared. “People lining the streets, the overpasses — we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.”
Presidential Tributes
Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush paid their respects as Billy Graham’s casket lay in repose at the Library. George W. Bush reflected on how Billy had changed his life. “His care and teachings were the real beginning of my faith journey and the catalyst for me to stop drinking,” President Bush said. The impact Billy Graham had on people transcended political lines, touching hearts across the nation and beyond.
