Who would've thought? Being part of the British royal family comes with perks like traveling the world on private planes. But for Camilla Parker Bowles, Duchess of Cornwall, it's not all luxury. Despite the lavish accommodations, Camilla isn’t exactly thrilled about flying. In fact, the 70-year-old royal has decided to skip a significant portion of her upcoming royal tour with Prince Charles because of her deep fear of air travel.
According to The Daily Mail, a spokesperson from Clarence House recently confirmed that Camilla will accompany Prince Charles, 69, on the first leg of their journey. They’ll fly together from England to Brisbane, Australia, to attend the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday, April 4. However, instead of continuing the tour with Charles, Camilla will head back home. Meanwhile, Charles will proceed with the rest of his itinerary, which includes short flights to places like Vanuatu, Cairns, Gove, and Darwin.

Now, this might seem like a lot of fuss, but let’s break it down. The royal representative explained that the tour is quite intense, with some truly spectacular destinations for Prince Charles to explore. Camilla’s last visit to Australia was back in 2013, and she’s made it clear that attending the Commonwealth Games is a priority for her. “She regards it as a very important part of the trip,” the spokesperson emphasized. When asked if Camilla was cutting her trip short, the rep added, “Better than not going at all. She decided a few weeks ago to solidify her plans. There are no health issues. She’s in great shape. The Duchess simply doesn’t enjoy flying, but sometimes, she has to face that fear and just do it.”
Could Charles Be Missing a Big Family Moment?
Adding another layer to this story is the possibility that Charles and Camilla’s trip to Australia might coincide with Kate Middleton’s due date for her third child. While the exact delivery date isn’t known, Kate and Prince William have already announced they’re expecting their new bundle of joy in April. Missing the birth of his newest grandchild would certainly be tough for Charles, who’s already shown how much he loves being a grandpa to Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
Charles once shared his thoughts on being a proud grandfather, saying, “It’s a different chapter of life. The best part is encouraging them and showing them things that spark their interest. My grandmother did this for me, and she was amazing. It’s crucial to form a bond when they’re young.” Last year, he even revealed a sweet detail about reading Harry Potter books to George and Charlotte—how adorable is that?
