Let's Talk About the 2018 Oscars and Meryl Streep

Okay, listen up, because this is important. If you were watching the 2018 Oscars and found yourself scratching your head about Meryl Streep, you're not alone. The 68-year-old legend, who’s nothing short of an icon, was the star of more than just her category that night. Jimmy Kimmel, the host of the show, had a field day with her during his opening monologue. Now, before you start thinking Meryl’s got some hidden criminal record, let me set the record straight: it was all in good fun.

Jimmy Kimmel, the guy who’s got the knack for making everyone laugh, pointed out Meryl Streep right there in the front row. He said, “Right here in the front row, maybe the greatest actor of all time, Meryl Streep is here with us.” And then he went on to say, “She earned her 21st Oscar nomination. Meryl's film career started in 1977. The longest she ever went without being nominated was from 1992 to 1995… and that's only because those were the years she was in prison, and that, I think, is amazing.”

Meryl’s Night at the Oscars: The Jokes Kept Coming

But the jokes didn’t stop there. Later in the evening, Jennifer Lawrence asked Jodie Foster why she was using crutches on-stage. Jodie, without missing a beat, joked, “Yeah, she I, Tonya’d me.” Now, if you’re wondering what that means, it’s a reference to the movie where someone gets injured in a scandalous way. Meryl didn’t win that night—her performance in The Post was overshadowed by Frances McDormand’s incredible work in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. But let’s not forget, Meryl’s still got two Best Actress Oscars under her belt (for Sophie's Choice in 1982 and The Iron Lady in 2011) and one Best Supporting Actress award (for Kramer vs. Kramer in 1979).

This isn’t the first time Jimmy’s poked fun at Meryl. The year before, at the 2017 Oscars, Jimmy said, “One [actor] in particular has stood the test of time for her many uninspiring and overrated performances.” And then he called out Meryl, asking her to stand up. He even went as far as to say, “Everybody, please join me in giving her a totally undeserved round of applause, will you? The highly overrated Meryl Streep, everyone.”

And then there was that January appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Jimmy challenged Meryl to name all 20 of the Oscar nominations she had received up to that point. Guess what? She could only remember six! So, no, Meryl didn’t injure Jodie, and she certainly didn’t serve time in prison. Her saintly reputation is safe. Or should we say, she’s not nearly as devilish as that Prada-wearing alter-ego of hers?
