Why Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Aren't Inviting These Big Names To Their Wedding

Prince Harry asked not to invite Barack Obama to his wedding

Planning a wedding is tough enough, but when you're a royal, the stakes are even higher. For Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, deciding who to invite wasn’t just about personal preferences—it was a diplomatic dance. Surprisingly, some major names won’t be making an appearance on their big day, and here's why.

According to reports from The Daily Mail, Meghan and Harry have decided not to extend invitations to former U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, current President Donald Trump, and UK Prime Minister Theresa May. The reason? Since Harry isn't in line to inherit the throne, the wedding doesn't require the same level of formality as other royal events. It’s a decision that’s sparked quite a bit of chatter in both the media and political circles.

Why No Political Heavyweights?

A spokesperson from Kensington Palace clarified the situation by stating, "It has been decided that an official list of political leaders—both UK and international—is not necessary for Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s wedding." This decision was made after consulting with Her Majesty’s Government and ultimately approved by The Royal Household. Essentially, the couple is keeping things more intimate and personal rather than hosting a grand, state-like affair.

  • But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Earlier, The Sun had reported that UK government officials were concerned about Harry’s desire to invite the Obamas. Politicians expressed fears over how President Trump might react if he felt snubbed while the Obamas received an invite. These concerns sparked quite a bit of tension behind closed doors.

“Harry has made it clear he wants the Obamas at the wedding, so it’s causing a lot of nervousness,” a senior government source told The Sun late last year. “Trump could react very badly if the Obamas get to a royal wedding before he has had a chance to meet the Queen. Conversations are ongoing, and ministers will eventually have to decide. If the Prime Minister lays down the law, Harry will just have to suck it up.”

    Harry’s Friendship With the Obamas

Prince Harry has always had a close relationship with the Obamas, particularly during their time in the White House. Whether it’s sharing laughs at charity events or collaborating on humanitarian projects, the two seem genuinely comfortable around each other. In fact, back in December, Harry even managed to rope Michelle Obama into being interviewed by him for a BBC radio show. That’s how close they are!

On the flip side, Harry hasn’t met Donald Trump personally, though his daughter Ivanka Trump did face criticism for offering delayed congratulations to Harry and Meghan on Twitter. Talk about awkward!

    Who Decides the Guest List?

Ultimately, the final say on the guest list lies with Buckingham Palace since the wedding isn’t considered a state occasion. While the UK government can offer input, it seems Harry’s wish to include the Obamas won’t come true this time around. But hey, maybe one day we’ll get our own invites!
