Let’s take a moment to honor the life of Sheila Farebrother, the loving mother of music legend Elton John. On Monday, December 4, Elton announced the heartbreaking news of her passing through an emotional Instagram post, sharing a cherished photo of the two together.
In his heartfelt message, the 70-year-old singer expressed his shock and deep sorrow over losing his mom. “So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning. I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock,” Elton wrote. “Travel safe Mum. Thank you for everything. I will miss you so much. Love, Elton.” As of now, the cause of her death has not been disclosed.

This tragic news comes just months after Elton and his mother reconciled after a long period of estrangement. Back in May, Elton marked their renewed connection with a touching Mother’s Day tribute. “Dear Mum, Happy Mother’s Day! So happy we are back in touch. Love, Elton xo #MothersDay,” he fondly wrote.
A Journey of Reconnection
The road to mending their relationship wasn't easy. In a 2016 interview, Elton revealed that they had reconnected, choosing to respect his mother’s privacy throughout the process. “Out of respect for my mother’s privacy, I have always shied away from speaking publicly about our relationship,” he explained to The Mirror. “However, I can say that we are now back in touch and have been so since my mother’s 90th birthday.”

Their silence spanned nearly a decade, dating back to 2008, when Sheila refused to sever ties with two of Elton’s oldest friends, Bob Halley and John Reid. This decision came after Elton had a falling out with them. Recalling the conversation, Sheila told Daily Mail in 2015, “I told him, ‘I’m not about to do that and drop them. Bob is like a son to me. He has always been marvelous to me and he lives nearby and keeps an eye on me.’” She went on to describe how shocked she was when Elton told her he hated her and abruptly ended the call. “Imagine! To me, his mother!”

Reconciliation Before It Was Too Late
Despite the years of silence, Sheila remained resilient. During that same 2015 interview, she admitted she had grown accustomed to their estrangement. “It’s seven years now in June. But you know, I’ve got used to it. And it was all so stupid — so petty,” she shared. Thankfully, they found their way back to each other before it was too late. Our thoughts are with Elton, his family, and friends during this incredibly tough time.
