It’s been a journey for Jimmy Kimmel and his family, especially since their seven-month-old son Billy required a follow-up open-heart surgery. Initially, the operation had to be postponed due to colds within the Kimmel household, but by early December, Billy successfully underwent the much-needed procedure. And guess what? The little champ made a memorable guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live alongside his famous dad!
Jimmy Kimmel Shares Heartfelt Moment with Billy Onstage
Jimmy, now 50, took a moment during his late-night show to share some light-hearted yet emotional words about Billy’s recovery. “I was out last week because this little guy had heart surgery,” Jimmy said as he held Billy on stage. “But look at him—he’s fine, everybody! He may have pooped, but he’s absolutely fine.” The audience erupted in laughter and applause as Jimmy added, “Daddy cries on TV, but Billy doesn’t. It’s just unbelievable.”

Billy’s Recovery: A Triumph of Strength and Resilience
Jimmy went on to express his awe at Billy’s resilience. “This is amazing—he had an operation a week ago,” Jimmy shared with a proud smile. “He’s doing great, and they say he’s on track for at least a bronze medal in the Olympics in 2036!” The audience erupted in cheers, celebrating Billy’s progress, especially as the holidays approached.
ABC had previously announced on December 4 that Billy underwent a “scheduled and successful heart surgery.” Following the procedure, Jimmy took a week off from his late-night show to focus on his son’s recovery. Celebrities like Tracee Ellis Ross, Neil Patrick Harris, and Melissa McCarthy graciously stepped in to keep the show running smoothly.
Jimmy’s Emotional Journey with Billy’s Health
Back in August, Jimmy revealed that Billy would require additional surgeries, even though he had already undergone open-heart surgery shortly after birth. “He has to have two more open-heart surgeries,” Jimmy told The Hollywood Reporter. “We want to get them over with so we don’t have to think about it all the time, but it could definitely be worse.”

Earlier this year, Jimmy made headlines when he opened up about Billy’s heart condition during an emotional speech on his show. “I knew I had to say something, and I knew I’d get emotional. But I thought maybe we could turn it into something positive,” Jimmy explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “I had a lot of time to think at the hospital, and it just so happened our government was deciding whether millions of people should have healthcare at that time.”
“I think it made a big impact on American citizens,” Jimmy added. “But I’m not sure, based on how our so-called leaders voted, whether it made a big impact on the Senate or House.”

Billy’s Progress: A Ray of Hope
Despite the challenges, Jimmy has always been vocal about Billy’s remarkable progress. “He’s doing great. Young Billy made his first visit to our office today,” Jimmy gushed. “He’s juggling, translating Flaubert from French into English—he’s really an amazing kid. No, he smiles. That’s pretty much it. He’s very interested in ceiling fans. I could get him to pay the same amount for Netflix just to watch ceiling fans.”
Jimmy and Molly, who married in July 2013, are already parents to a three-year-old daughter, Jane Kimmel. The TV star is also a father to two older children—daughter Katie Kimmel, 26, and son Kevin Kimmel, 24—from his first marriage to Gina Kimmel.
