Wow, what an unforgettable moment! The 2018 Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 7, featured a rare and remarkable public appearance by the legendary Kirk Douglas. Joined by his stunning daughter-in-law, Catherine Zeta-Jones, the 101-year-old Hollywood icon made a grand entrance that brought the audience to its feet. After a heartfelt tribute celebrating Kirk’s iconic film career, the star was escorted onto the stage amidst a standing ovation. Together with Catherine, he presented the award for Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture, leaving everyone in awe of his enduring legacy.

A Tribute to Breaking Boundaries

In her speech, Catherine Zeta-Jones, 48, paid tribute to her father-in-law’s groundbreaking contributions to cinema. “In 1991, my father-in-law, this living Hollywood legend, Kirk, was recognized by the Writer’s Guild for his pivotal role in ending the infamous Hollywood blacklist,” Catherine began. “Not only did he hire the blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo to pen the epic Spartacus, but he also ensured Trumbo received proper credit for his work. That act of courage changed Hollywood forever.” Her words resonated deeply, reminding us all of Kirk’s unwavering commitment to justice and artistic integrity.

  • Once Catherine concluded her heartfelt tribute, Kirk Douglas himself took the mic. With a touch of humor and humility, he quipped, “I wasn’t going to speak, because I could never follow you.” It was a touching moment that reminded everyone of his sharp wit and timeless charm. Just weeks before the Golden Globes, Kirk celebrated his incredible 101st birthday surrounded by loved ones, including his wife, Anne Buydens, 98, and his actor son, Michael Douglas, 73. “My brother Joel and I [attended] a family celebration for Kirk’s 101st birthday on Saturday [Dec. 9],” Michael shared on Facebook at the time. “At 101, Dad is a true amazement and a great time was had by all.”

    Defying the Odds

After recovering from a stroke two decades ago, Kirk has maintained steady health, largely thanks to his strong spirit and enduring love for life. “I was lucky enough to find my soulmate 63 years ago, and I believe our wonderful marriage and our nightly ‘golden hour’ chats have helped me survive all things,” he once told Closer Weekly during an exclusive interview. “I am always asked for advice on living a long and healthy life. I don’t have any. I do believe, however, that we have a purpose for being here. I was spared after a helicopter crash and a stroke to do more good in the world before I leave it.”

Despite needing assistance with mobility—whether it’s a wheelchair or a team of nurses—Kirk continues to inspire those around him. “He is a constant artist, always working on something. I think that’s the key—feeding that hunger as an artist keeps him from being bored,” his grandson, Cameron Douglas, revealed to Closer. “He is sort of cruising [into age 101]. I suspect he will be around for a long time!” Many of us couldn’t agree more, hoping to see this Hollywood legend continue to thrive for years to come.
