When legendary musician Tom Petty passed away in October at the young age of 66, it left an indelible mark on the world of music—and especially on his band, The Heartbreakers. Speaking to Closer Weekly, the band members revealed they're still grappling with grief and aren't ready to return to the stage or studio anytime soon.
"We're all in such shock and disbelief that Tom is gone," drummer Steve Ferrone told Closer Weekly. "Right now, we're not thinking about performing or making new music. It's just too raw, too painful to even contemplate." The Heartbreakers, who were Petty's backbone for decades, are taking their time to process the loss of their leader, friend, and musical soulmate.
Cherishing Two Decades of Memories

Steve Ferrone, who joined The Heartbreakers in 1994, shared how deeply he cherishes every moment he spent with Petty over the past 25 years. "Every single memory with Tom is precious to me," Ferrone said. "We're just not there yet. The thought of performing without him feels... incomplete. It's something we'll have to work through as a band, but right now, it's just too soon."
