When Grey's Anatomy's Jackson Avery Buys A Yacht: First World Problems

How Much Money Did Jackson Avery Inherit on Grey's Anatomy?

Let’s talk about the men of Grey’s Anatomy for a moment. In the Thursday, Nov. 2 episode, instead of being stuck at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, they decided to hang out on a luxurious yacht that Jackson Avery, played by Jesse Williams, purchased with his inheritance. And let me tell you, we were seriously jealous of that posh scene. But here's the thing—“inheritance” doesn’t even begin to cover what Jackson came into. When his grandfather passed away earlier in Season 14, Jackson inherited a staggering $250 million. Yes, you read that right—$250 million!

Money Talks: Jackson Avery's Family Dinner

During the episode titled "Ain't That a Kick in the Head?", Jackson had an honest conversation about his newfound wealth during a family dinner with his mom, Catherine Avery (played by Debbie Allen), his stepfather, Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), and Richard's daughter, Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary). Jackson tried to explain his situation to his mom, Catherine, saying, “It wasn’t a gift, mom. It was an economy.” Catherine, however, wasn’t buying it. She shot back, “You think having a lot of money is tough? Try not having it sometime!”

    Maggie Pierce Weighs In

Maggie, who might just be Jackson’s next love interest, summed up his situation in her usual verbose manner. She said, “I went to college on a full ride when I was 15, which sounds awesome, but I had no friends and I cried all the time and it was awful. I mean, I don’t know what it’s like to have Beyoncé money, but I do know that research shows that having too many choices is the leading cause of stress. Now, Jackson could literally choose to do anything for the rest of his life.”

Maggie continued, “You could buy a vineyard and never work again. Or you could buy a hospital and work until the day you die. Even if you give it away, you have to decide who gets it and who doesn’t. You could buy an island. Or you could buy two islands and make them fight each other. I mean, I get that you’re not complaining, but it is a problem. It is stressful.” Watch the scene below!

    First World Problems: Jackson's Dilemma

These are what you'd call first-world problems, right? We’ve always known the doctors on Grey’s Anatomy make good money—especially those who got that plane crash settlement—but Jackson now represents the one percent at the hospital. After buying a yacht, we can’t wait to see what Jackson does with his newfound fortune next!
