In a candid conversation with Closer Weekly, legendary actor William H. Macy, now 67, dives deep into his life’s journey. He reflects on the years of struggle before fame found him and how becoming a father late in life brought unexpected joy and fulfillment.
William was already 50 when his first daughter, Sofia, graced his life in 2000. Two years later, his second daughter, Georgia, joined the family. "I'm truly thankful it happened later in life," the star of the hit show Shameless shared with Closer. "By then, I had the patience and financial stability to be the father I wanted to be. Honestly, I never thought I'd become a dad, and now, I can't imagine life without them!"

A Long Road to Success
Success didn’t come easy for William. Born and raised in the South, his early years were marked by the influence of a hard-drinking mother, who inspired his iconic role as Frank Gallagher in Shameless, and a father who was a WWII bomber pilot. For years, he toiled away in theater and commercials in Chicago and New York City, trying to make a name for himself. But it wasn’t until his breakout role in the 1996 film Fargo that things began to change. “That’s when I finally felt like I had moved up to the adults’ table,” William reflects. “An Oscar nomination is a game-changer. I wish I had done it sooner.”
From Fargo to Shameless
After Fargo, the floodgates opened for William. He started landing lead roles, including the unforgettable character of Frank Gallagher in Shameless, a role that has earned him four Emmy nominations and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. “Frank’s like a walking party,” William says with a chuckle. “Everyone has someone like Frank in their family, and that’s what makes him so relatable.”
