In a candid and exclusive interview with Closer Weekly, Dolly shared her thoughts on why she never had children. This blonde beauty, who has been married to her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, since 1966, had some truly inspiring words to say.
Dolly’s Unique Perspective on Motherhood
Now, Dolly didn’t hold back when she opened up about her decision. “God has a plan for everything, and I think it probably was his plan for me not to have kids, so that everybody’s kids could be mine,” she revealed. What a beautiful way to look at life! And if that wasn’t heartwarming enough, Dolly also shared that she’s the godmother to none other than Miley Cyrus, former Disney star and her close friend’s daughter. How’s that for an extended family?
Dolly’s Thoughts Through the Years
This isn’t the first time Dolly has spoken about her choice. Back in 2014, she opened up to Glamour UK, sharing how she and Carl once dreamed about what their kids might look like. “We thought, ‘What would they look like? Would they be tall because he’s tall? Or would they be little squats like me?’” Dolly joked. They even had a name picked out for a potential daughter—Carla. But as time went on, they realized it just wasn’t meant to be. “Now that we’re older, we’re glad,” Dolly admitted. That’s some serious wisdom right there.

Back in 2014, Dolly continued, “I would have been a great mother, I think. I would probably have given up everything else. Because I would’ve felt guilty about that, if I’d have left them. Everything would have changed. I probably wouldn’t have been a star.” Their plan seems to be working, though, considering they’ve been married for over 50 years. In Hollywood terms, that’s practically a lifetime!
Carl Dean: The Man Behind the Woman
Speaking of Carl, Dolly’s rarely-seen husband, he allegedly told her early on in their relationship that he wasn’t a fan of living in the spotlight. According to Dolly, Carl once said, “Dolly, I want you to have everything you want, and I’m happy for you, but don’t you ever ask me to go to another one of them dang things again!” Talk about keeping it real. Carl’s support has clearly been a big part of Dolly’s success, and it’s refreshing to see a partnership where both people’s needs are respected.
