Jerry Seinfeld: The Journey Of A Reluctant Comedian

Jerry Seinfeld Opens up About His Childhood

Alright, listen up, folks. Picture this: Jerry Seinfeld, the legendary comedian from Long Island, New York, had a little secret growing up. “I wasn’t exactly the life of the party around my parents,” he confessed during a lively Q&A session at The New Yorker Festival. “When I told them I was going to be a comedian, it was like coming out of the closet. ‘Hey, guess what? I’m actually funny!’”

And let me tell you, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Jerry’s parents, Kalman and Betty Seinfeld, were both orphans who didn’t exactly follow the traditional path. “They got married in their 40s,” Jerry explained. “They were kind of wild cards themselves, not fitting into any conventional mold.” So, when Jerry dropped the bombshell about his comedy career, their reaction was pretty laid-back. “Oh, okay, good. Do whatever makes you happy,” they said. Talk about supportive!

  • So, Jerry took the leap into comedy after working odd jobs like waiting tables and selling light bulbs over the phone. “Let me tell you, it wasn’t easy finding people sitting in the dark thinking, ‘I need a bulb right now!’” he joked. At the age of 27, he made his big debut on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1981. “You know that feeling when you wonder what it’s like to be an Olympic athlete? Spending years training for something that lasts five minutes? I know exactly what that’s like,” he shared. “If Johnny Carson likes you, you’re in the business. If he doesn’t, you’re out.”

Guess what? Johnny loved him. And Jerry, now 63, went on to co-create the iconic sitcom Seinfeld with Larry David. He’s stayed close with his co-stars, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. “I spoke to her just before I came here, and she’s doing well,” he reassured fans.

    Master of His Domain

And if you think Jerry’s just resting on his laurels, think again. He had none other than President Barack Obama guest-star on his internet series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee in 2015. “It was absolutely once-in-a-lifetime. It was surreal,” he admitted. “And it was only fitting for someone who’s truly a Master of His Domain.”
