Hey there, TV fans! If you’re as excited as I am about the return of Grey’s Anatomy, you won’t want to miss the newest addition to the show. Season 14 kicked off on September 28, and it brought with it a brand-new, game-changing character: Owen Hunt’s long-lost sister, Megan Hunt. She’s finally arrived at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and she’s here to shake things up. Let’s dive into everything you need to know about Megan and her dramatic journey on the series.
When Did Megan First Step Into the World of Grey’s Anatomy?
Now, Megan isn’t exactly a newcomer to the Grey’s universe. She made her first appearance in a flashback during an earlier episode titled “The Room Where It Happens.” But her official debut on the show came in the Season 13 finale. Remember that intense scene where Owen (played by Kevin McKidd) and his wife, Amelia Shepherd (played by Caterina Scorsone), were anxiously waiting for Megan to arrive at the hospital after being missing for years? That’s when we were first introduced to this intriguing character. Fast forward to Season 14, and Megan is now a recurring character, meaning she’s here to stay for a while—and trust me, you’re going to love her!
Who Is the Actress Behind Megan Hunt?
Initially, the role of Megan was played by actress Bridget Regan, but due to scheduling conflicts—she’s currently starring on TNT’s The Last Ship—her character had to be recast. Enter Abigail Spencer, the talented actress who took over the role in Season 14. Abigail’s casting was met with excitement from fans and even Bridget herself, who praised her successor on Twitter. “Thanks for all the love guys! @AbigailSpencer is an incredible actor, tip-top lady, and will be a BRILLIANT Megan on #GreysAnatomy,” Bridget wrote. And let’s just say, Abigail has definitely stepped into the role with grace and talent!

Where Has Megan Been All This Time?
Megan’s disappearance is one of the most dramatic storylines on the show. Ten years ago, she was working as a U.S. Army surgeon in Baghdad, Iraq, when her helicopter went missing while transporting a sick patient through unprotected airspace. For years, Owen searched tirelessly for his sister, eventually returning to Seattle, where he became a trauma surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Meanwhile, Megan was presumed dead. But here’s the twist: she was actually alive, held captive in the basement of a house in a rebel-controlled area. She endured some tough times, including beatings early on, but she managed to adapt, even raising a child and performing surgeries. In the Season 14 premiere, Megan reassured her brother, saying, “I didn’t want you to waste your life looking for me. I prayed every night that you had gone home to Mom and married anyone but Beth. I wanted you to be happy.”

As the story unfolds in Season 14, we learn more about the circumstances surrounding Megan’s disappearance. While treating an Iraqi woman who the Army believed was a victim of a shooting, Megan discovered that the patient was actually the shooter. This revelation complicates matters, and it’s presumed that the woman had something to do with the helicopter never reaching its destination. Megan’s backstory is as dramatic as they come, and it adds layers to her character that keep viewers hooked.

Is Megan Engaged to Nathan Riggs?
Not exactly, but their relationship is complicated, to say the least. Years ago, Nathan proposed to Megan with an emerald necklace while they were working together in Iraq. However, it turns out he originally bought the necklace for another woman with whom he had a brief affair. This revelation led to both Megan and Nathan admitting infidelity, straining their relationship before Megan’s disappearance. When Megan was eventually found, Nathan was living in Seattle and had started seeing Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo). This created quite the love triangle in Season 14. In the premiere, Nathan proposed to Megan again while she was recovering in the hospital, but Meredith interrupted, leading to another cliffhanger. Megan ultimately didn’t accept his proposal, believing he still harbored feelings for Meredith.
