Actress Drew Barrymore, who rose to fame as a child star in the iconic movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, has revealed that she doesn't want her children, Olive Kopelman, 6, and Frankie Kopelman, 4, to follow in her footsteps. In a recent interview with People, Drew shared her thoughts on shielding her kids from the pressures of early fame and allowing them to enjoy their childhood.
Why Drew Barrymore is Saying "No" to Child Acting
Reflecting on her own experiences as a child actor, Drew Barrymore made it clear that she has no intention of letting her kids dive into the entertainment world at such a young age. "I’m not going to let them be kid actors," she stated firmly. "That’s so not their journey." Drew wants her children to focus on being kids, playing, and discovering who they are outside the spotlight, rather than navigating the complexities of the acting industry too soon.

Supporting Her Kids' Dreams—On Their Terms
Drew explained that while she wants her children to have a normal childhood, she wouldn't stand in their way if they decided acting was something they truly wanted to pursue later in life. "If they want to be actors [later] in life, I would be so supportive of it," she said with a laugh, adding, "Can you imagine me being [a] mom [who is] pushing her kids out there? That’s not going to happen." Drew’s approach reflects her desire to let her children explore their own interests and make their own choices when the time is right.
For now, Drew is all about letting Olive and Frankie focus on building their imaginations and skills outside of acting. Whether it’s playing with building toys, Legos, or Magna-Tiles, Drew is encouraging her kids to embrace their creativity and curiosity. "Frankie’s really into Legos right now, which I’m really excited about because I mistakenly thought it was a boy’s toy and it turns out she’s really good at it," Drew shared. "Her sister’s really good at Magna-Tiles. They’re both very good builders." It’s clear that Drew values her daughters' unique talents and interests, and she’s excited to see where they take them.
Reflecting on Her Own Childhood
Growing up, Drew had her own set of interests that mirrored her kids' current hobbies. "I don’t think I was ever a builder when I was a kid [but] I collected cars and kept index cards. I, too, like boys’ things, like cars for boys, so I see the pattern in my girls," she admitted. Drew’s insight into her own childhood has helped her understand her children better and appreciate the ways in which they’re forging their own paths.

"I say to Will Kopelman, thank you for always being the best dad, and supporting, and enabling me to do what I need and want to do," she wrote. "I know that’s not everyone’s situation. And I never take it for granted. I never had family growing up." Drew’s words highlight the importance of teamwork and mutual respect in raising her kids.
