Prince Charles vs. Princess Diana: The Fame Game
Back in 1981, the world was absolutely captivated by the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. It was the fairy-tale marriage everyone dreamed of, and Diana quickly became a global icon. But behind the scenes, things weren’t as rosy as they seemed. According to reports, Prince Charles started feeling overshadowed by his wife’s skyrocketing popularity soon after their marriage.
Lady Elizabeth Anson, a party planner and cousin to Queen Elizabeth, gave some insight into this dynamic. She recalled, "Diana sort of transformed into this stunning, elegant blonde beauty. They went on a visit to Wales, and that’s when Prince Charles began to realize, 'They’ve come out to see my wife, not me.' It was a wake-up call for him, and it wasn’t easy to handle."

Charles' Jealousy Extends Beyond Diana
Interestingly, Charles' feelings of being overshadowed didn’t stop with Diana. Fast forward to 2011, and we see a similar situation with his eldest son, Prince William, and Kate Middleton. When William and Kate tied the knot, Charles reportedly felt self-conscious about the immense adoration the public had for the newlyweds, especially Kate's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.
According to Charles’ friend Robert Higdon, who spoke to author Tom Bower for the unauthorized royal biography, Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion and Defiance of Prince Charles, "Charles grew worried that the public’s attention was shifting to them. He saw Kate and William as the new stars and feared he’d be left in the shadows." It’s clear that Charles struggled with feeling replaced in the public eye, even by his own family members.
