There’s no doubt about it—being married to Queen Elizabeth’s grandson comes with its fair share of pressure. When Meghan Markle walked down the aisle with Prince Harry on May 19, the world watched as Elizabeth herself attended the ceremony. Now, royal fans everywhere are curious about what kind of relationship the princess-to-be has with her soon-to-be grandmother-in-law.
Both Meghan and the Queen made appearances at the Christmas Day and Commonwealth Day services back in December, capturing the attention of the public. They were also photographed together during the official photos released by Kensington Palace after the royal wedding. One of the most iconic moments? That first photo of Meghan performing a graceful curtsey for the Queen. And in mid-March, Queen Elizabeth gave the couple her royal blessing to marry, followed by an official letter in mid-May. It’s clear that the Queen has been fully supportive of this union from the start.

Here’s the thing: Despite Meghan sometimes breaking royal protocol, it turns out that she and the Queen actually get along pretty well. In a previous interview with Entertainment Tonight, royal expert Katie Nicholl, author of Harry: Life, Loss, and Love, shared some fascinating insights.
Meghan: A Royal Fiancé Like No Other
When you think about it, Meghan doesn’t exactly fit the mold of a traditional royal fiancé. She’s American, a well-known actress who starred in Suits, and has even filmed some racy scenes. Add to that the fact that she’s been divorced, is older than Harry, and comes from a mixed-heritage background, and you might wonder if the Queen, as a member of an older generation, had any concerns. But according to Nicholl, the Queen saw something special in Meghan right from the start. “She really felt from the outset that Meghan was a positive person in Prince Harry’s life. That she made him very happy and that she was really very supportive,” Nicholl explained.

The Queen’s Role in Harry and Meghan’s Wedding
When it came to planning their big day, the Queen reportedly gave Harry and Meghan a lot of creative freedom. According to Nicholl, “I’m told from my sources at Windsor Castle that [Queen Elizabeth] is being very, very accommodating. She has said to the couple, ‘This is your wedding, this is your day. Plan it as you want it.’” That’s a pretty generous gesture when you consider that the Queen was essentially opening up her home for the occasion.

The bond between the Queen and Harry has always been strong, and it’s heartwarming to see her support for his relationship with Meghan. “Don’t forget she’s hugely close to her grandson. They have a very special relationship. She is thrilled to be seeing Harry settle down and finally marry,” Nicholl noted. “She’s going to want to be a very important part of that day and indeed she will,” she said, accurately predicting the Queen’s prominent role in the wedding.
Meghan and the Queen’s Corgis: An Instant Connection
Even the Queen’s beloved corgis seemed to take a liking to Meghan. During their engagement interview, Harry playfully remarked, “The corgis took to you straight away. I’ve spent the last 33 years being barked at; this one walks in, absolutely nothing.” Meghan didn’t shy away from the compliment. “That’s true,” she admitted with a smile. “Just laying on my feet during tea, it was very sweet.”
Meghan’s Admiration for Queen Elizabeth
Meghan herself has expressed admiration for the Queen, noting how special it was to meet her through Harry’s perspective. “It’s incredible, I think, you know, to be able to meet her through his lens, not just with his honor and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother,” Meghan shared during their engagement interview. “All of those layers have been so important for me so that when I met her I had such a deep understanding and, of course, incredible respect for being able to have that time with her. And we’ve had a really—she’s an incredible woman.”
