A Life-Saving Moment at 36,000 Feet
It’s not every day that someone experiences a medical emergency mid-flight, but that’s exactly what happened to jazz pianist Robert “Bob” Ringwald, father of Pretty in Pink star Molly Ringwald. At 36,000 feet, Bob faced a health crisis, and thanks to the incredible response from Southwest Airlines and a doctor who happened to be onboard, his life was saved. Molly, now 50, took to Twitter to express her heartfelt gratitude to the heroes who acted quickly and professionally to ensure her father’s safety.
“We all love to publicly vent against airlines, but today I would like to thank Southwest Airlines and the doctor who happened to be onboard,” Molly wrote in a tweet on April 26. “They emergency-landed the plane for my dad. Because of their speed and professionalism, my father’s life was saved.” Her words were a powerful reminder of the importance of recognizing the good that happens around us, even in unexpected moments.

Southwest Airlines Steps Up
Southwest Airlines wasted no time in responding to Molly’s heartfelt message. In a tweet, they expressed their happiness that Bob had been well taken care of by their crew. “Molly, we are so happy to hear that your father was taken care of by our crew today,” they wrote. “We would love to follow up further so that we can recognize our crew.” It’s clear that the airline values the dedication of their staff and wants to celebrate their life-saving efforts.

Bob Ringwald, a renowned jazz pianist, is more than just a father to Molly—he’s a musical legend in his own right. Even as Molly’s career soared with iconic roles in John Hughes films like Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, she remained deeply connected to her dad’s Fulton Street Jazz Band, continuing to perform with them over the years.
Jazz: A Lifelong Passion
For Molly Ringwald, jazz isn’t just a genre—it’s a way of life. “I grew up in a home filled with music and had an early appreciation of jazz since my dad was a jazz musician,” she explained in a press release for her debut studio album, Except Sometimes, released in 2013. “Beginning at around age three, I started singing with his band, and jazz music has continued to be one of my three passions along with acting and writing. I like to say jazz music is my musical equivalent of comfort food. It’s always where I go back to when I want to feel grounded.”
Molly’s connection to jazz goes beyond nostalgia. She famously recorded a jazz cover of the Simple Minds song “Don’t You Forget About Me” from The Breakfast Club, a track that continues to resonate with fans. As we celebrate Molly’s success, we also hope for many more years of her and her dad making beautiful jazz music together.
