Hey there, royal watchers! Just like how Prince William and Kate Middleton became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after their big day, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to receive their own royal titles after they tie the knot on May 19. Now, the Queen has a pretty limited selection of dukedoms to choose from, and some have been ruled out due to their, let's say, less-than-stellar histories. Up until recently, it was widely assumed that Harry and Meghan would take on the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex. It's an available peerage that doesn't carry any negative baggage.

But hold onto your tiaras, because things might be about to change! Rumor has it that the Queen is considering reviving the long-dormant dukedom of Connaught. This dukedom is named after Connacht in Ireland and was originally created by Queen Victoria back in 1874 for her third son, Arthur. Interestingly enough, the title hasn't been used since 1943, when the second Duke passed away. And here's a fun fact: the first Duke of Connaught also held the title of Earl of Sussex. Crazy, right?

Why the Dukedom of Connaught?

Here's the thing: choosing the dukedom of Connaught could be seen as a nod to Ireland and a way to celebrate the improved relations between the UK and Ireland. Noel Cunningham, a royal commentator, told the Irish Independent, “It is not beyond the realms of possibility that, as a gesture of goodwill towards Ireland, the English foreign office would advise the Queen that this is a great time to bring back the title.”

Now, here's where things get tricky. The dukedom of Connaught might not be as straightforward a choice as Sussex. The original area of the dukedom is in Ireland, which is outside the UK, and thus outside the traditional sphere of influence for the royals. This could make it a more controversial choice. As royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams explained in the Irish Independent, "While the Queen's visit to Ireland was a highlight of her reign and symbolized improved relations, we must remember that Ireland has been a republic for decades. Reviving this title would require substantial debate in Ireland and could be seen as controversial."

But hey, we can't wait to find out what Meghan and Harry's titles will be next month! It's all part of the excitement leading up to their big day.
