Charlize Theron Opens Up About Motherhood: The Honest Truth

Sometimes, being the best mom you can be means owning up to the fact that your kids aren’t always perfect—and that’s okay. Charlize Theron has learned this lesson over the years as a mother of two. In a candid moment, she recently admitted that her kids, Jackson and August, can sometimes act like, well, “a–holes.”

Let’s break it down. Charlize shared her journey with motherhood in a heartfelt interview with ELLE. “When I was in my twenties, the idea of having a child terrified me,” she confessed. “But by the time I hit my thirties, I was ready. Still, there’s that moment where you think, ‘Oh God, will I still want to be a parent once I have kids?’” Charlize admitted that even she has bad days—days when she makes mistakes or when her kids are throwing tantrums at the worst possible times. “They’re little a–holes sometimes, and they pick the absolute worst moments to do it,” she laughed. “It’s a lot for one person to handle. But after six years of having my two little nuggets, not a single day goes by where I regret becoming a mom.”

Charlize adopted her son in 2012 and her daughter in 2015, stepping into the role of a single parent with a lot of pressure on her shoulders. “In the beginning, I thought I had to do everything myself, and I didn’t ask for as much help as I actually needed,” she recalled. “I felt like, ‘If I don’t do all of this, then maybe I’m a bad parent.’ But I’ve learned that’s not true. The second time around, I realized I’m happier—and so are my kids—when I ask for help.”

“People might think I have a staff of 40, but it’s nothing like that,” she added. “I’ve got one nanny, my mom living close by, and an amazing group of friends and family. I call them my village. It’s all about balance. I check my fuel gauge—am I running on empty or am I full? It’s up to me to decide how to refill that tank. You can’t run on empty forever, right?”

One thing is certain—Charlize’s kids are lucky to have such a supportive family network. Even though she’s a single parent, she’s not raising her children alone. “I knew I’d need my mom’s help if I was going to do this as a single parent,” the 42-year-old explained. “To say she’s not part of co-parenting my kids would be a lie. She jokes that being a grandparent is what she was born to do. I teased her, saying, ‘Yo, b-tch! What about raising me? Wasn’t that your job too?’ But I’m so lucky to have her. I’d feel pretty lost without my partner in crime in all of this.”
