The Crown: A Journey Through Time
Each season of Netflix’s hit series, The Crown, takes us through a decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. With its captivating storytelling and stunning performances, it’s no wonder the show continues to captivate audiences worldwide. As the series progresses, it's inevitable that it will eventually catch up to modern times. So, could we see a season that delves into the relationship between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle? It's an intriguing thought, isn't it?
Meghan Markle: The Perfect Fit?
According to executive producer Suzanne Mackie, Meghan Markle’s background in acting could make her the ideal candidate to portray herself on the show. In a lighthearted moment at a panel discussion in Jerusalem, Mackie joked, “She can play herself.” It’s a fascinating idea, but let’s not get our hopes up just yet. Mackie also touched on the pay disparity between the show’s former Queen, Claire Foy, and her male co-star Matt Smith, revealing a conversation that sparked important discussions within the industry.

While it’s fun to imagine such a modern twist, the reality is that Mackie’s idea is highly unlikely to come to fruition. When Meghan announced her engagement to Prince Harry back in November, she made it clear that she would be stepping away from acting to focus more on her charitable endeavors and the causes close to her heart. It seems she’s fully committed to her new role as a member of the royal family.

The Challenges of Modern-Day Storytelling
Fellow executive producer Andy Harries shared his thoughts on the challenges of dramatizing events that are still within living memory. With a touch of humor, he joked that “libel” could be a potential hurdle, but then acknowledged the more serious aspects of portraying recent history. As the show gets closer to the present day, there are more people who are alive and well, making it even more complex to navigate the sensitivities involved. It’s a delicate balance that requires careful consideration.

Looking Ahead: The Crown's Future Cast
As the show moves forward, the cast is set to undergo significant changes. Olivia Colman, who will take on the role of Queen Elizabeth, and Helena Bonham Carter, who’ll portray Princess Margaret, are the only new cast members officially announced for The Crown’s third season. There were rumors that Paul Bettany might play Prince Philip, but those discussions have since fallen through, as have talks with Hugh Laurie. The production team is still in the process of casting a young Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, according to casting director Nina Gold.
Season Three and Beyond: A New Chapter
Executive producer Andy Harries reflected on the upcoming seasons, calling them a test of the show’s endurance. He noted, “Season three and four will be the test of whether the show really has the legs to survive. I think we were the first television series ever to change cast and continue, and we will change cast twice.” It’s a daunting but exhilarating challenge that promises to keep the series fresh and captivating for audiences.
