A New Era with Kate and William

After Prince William married Kate Middleton in a lavish ceremony in April 2011, the couple decided to carve out their own space by spending much of their time in Norfolk. This decision was partly to maintain their privacy in a world where every move is scrutinized. However, this choice didn’t sit well with Charles. The book suggests that the distance between Highgrove and Norfolk isolated Charles from his grandchildren, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. It also allowed Kate’s mother, Carole Middleton, to step into a more prominent role in the family's life. “This shift,” the book states, “left Charles feeling sidelined and overshadowed.”

Charles' Reaction to the Middleton Influence

Charles’ dissatisfaction didn’t stop at geography. The book claims he allegedly decided to ignore Carole Middleton during social events, feeling that the Middletons were overshadowing his role in the royal family. "Charles began to fear that he was being usurped by the Middletons, and several of the Queen’s courtiers picked up on this," the book states. This situation escalated to the point where Prince William reportedly consulted with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth. To counter Charles’ snubs, the Queen decided to publicly acknowledge Carole by inviting a TV crew to film her touring the Balmoral estate with the Queen herself. Camilla's Perspective

While Charles was reportedly feeling overshadowed, his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, seemed to take a different stance. According to Robert Higdon, the chief executive of Charles’ charity foundation, Camilla didn’t seem to care much about the public's shifting attention. “She didn’t give a damn,” Higdon notes. On the other hand, Charles saw Kate and William as the new stars of the royal family and feared being sidelined. Interestingly, Camilla reportedly quipped about the rumors that Kate would become the first commoner Queen of England, saying, “That’ll be me.” A sassy and humorous reminder that she’s still very much in the picture.
