Even after all these years since the heartbreaking loss of Princess Diana and Prince Charles' remarriage to Camilla Parker Bowles, the story of their intertwined lives continues to captivate the world. In his latest book, Rebel Prince: The Power and Passion and Defiance of Prince Charles, author Tom Bower reveals startling new insights into the trio's complex relationship. According to Bower, Charles and Camilla allegedly conspired to tarnish Diana's image, portraying her as "unbalanced and unfaithful," in an effort to improve Camilla's public perception.
Bower claims that Charles and Camilla, alongside their PR representative and assistant private secretary Mark Bolland, devised a plan to reshape public opinion. Their strategy aimed to "demythologize Diana" by portraying her as manipulative and emotionally unstable following her tragic death in August 1997 at the tender age of 36. This revelation sheds light on the calculated efforts to redefine history and control the narrative surrounding one of the world's most beloved figures.

Reframing the Narrative
Bower's book uncovers how Charles and Camilla allegedly worked with author Penny Junor to recast Diana as an emotionally unstable and unfaithful spouse. They sought to depict her as someone suffering from borderline personality disorder, claiming that she had forced Charles back into Camilla's arms. This strategy was part of a larger effort to rehabilitate Camilla's image in the wake of Diana's untimely death.
For years leading up to their royal wedding in April 2005, Charles and Camilla worked tirelessly to change public perception. According to Bower, they made frequent appearances together at charity events and even traveled to New York City to meet with influential journalists and high society figures. Their goal was clear: to present Camilla as a compassionate and dignified figure worthy of royal status.
The Queen's Disapproval
Despite Charles and Camilla's efforts to sway royal fans, Queen Elizabeth reportedly harbored deep resentment toward Camilla. In Bower's account, the monarch once referred to Camilla as a "wicked woman" and insisted she wanted "nothing to do with her." This animosity stemmed from Elizabeth's disapproval of Charles' extramarital affair with Camilla during his marriage to Diana.
In the summer of 1998, Charles reportedly sought the Queen's blessing for his relationship with Camilla. However, after indulging in several martinis, Elizabeth delivered a scathing rebuke. "She vented her anger that he had lied about his relationship with what she called 'that wicked woman,'" Bower wrote. Elizabeth demanded that Camilla leave Charles alone to allow his marriage to Diana a chance to heal. Her strong disapproval left Charles surprised and unsettled.
