Since the premiere of Season 2 of 'Kevin Can Wait' back in late September, fans have been asking the same burning question: How exactly did Donna Gable pass away? Here we are, several episodes later, and we’re still no closer to an answer. The show has kept us guessing, dropping hints here and there, but never fully pulling back the curtain on Donna's untimely demise. Fans are holding out hope that this season will finally give us some much-needed clarity on what happened to Donna.
Kevin Gable's Struggles as a Single Dad
In the second episode of the season, we saw Kevin Gable, played by the lovable Kevin James, trying his best to step into the role of both parents. He's packing lunches, juggling after-school activities, and doing everything he can to keep his family together. His kids, Jack and Sara, noticed their dad was overdoing it and brought it up to their older sister, Kendra. During their heart-to-heart, Kendra mentioned their mom's passing but left out any specifics about how she died. It's moments like this that keep us wondering about the details surrounding Donna's death.
Meanwhile, Vanessa, portrayed by the always-charming Leah Remini, tried to console Kevin after bringing up the loss of his wife, Donna, while they were working on a case at an amusement park. Again, though, the show didn't elaborate on the circumstances of Donna's death. It's like the writers want to keep us on the edge of our seats, but it's starting to feel like we might never get the full story.

Season 2 Premiere: A Mystery Wrapped in Silence
In the very first episode of Season 2, the show didn't waste any time reminding us of Donna's absence. In one of the opening scenes, Kevin received an email from Donna's gym, asking where she'd been lately. When he showed it to Kendra, she casually mentioned that her mom had been gone for over a year but didn't elaborate on the circumstances. Later, during Kendra's wedding, Kevin and Kendra both expressed their wish that Donna could be there to celebrate. It's a recurring theme in the show: acknowledging Donna's death without revealing how it happened. It's like the writers are teasing us with these little reminders, keeping us hooked but never quite satisfying our curiosity.
Behind the Scenes: Why Was Donna Killed Off?
It turns out that Donna's death was a creative decision made after actress Erinn Hayes was let go from the show. CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl assured fans that her passing would be handled with sensitivity and respect. Executive Producer Rob Long explained, "We wanted to give Kevin's character a real challenge, something that would drive the story forward and show how a family can come together after tragedy. We felt it was the most respectful way to treat Donna's character, considering the amazing portrayal by Erinn Hayes."
Kevin James himself opened up about the decision in mid-October, revealing that the showrunners were running out of ideas. He admitted, "We realized the show needed a fresh direction. The storyline wasn't strong enough to sustain another season. Killing off Donna was a bold move, but it was necessary to keep the show engaging." Chris Roach, who plays Mott on the series, echoed this sentiment in an interview. "It wasn't personal," he said. "The show needed a new narrative arc. Erinn was fantastic while she was with us, but sometimes life throws you curveballs, and that's what we wanted to portray authentically."
Erinn Hayes' Departure and Leah Remini's Arrival
Erinn Hayes announced her departure from the show just a day after Leah Remini was cast as a Season 2 regular. Fans were thrilled about the 'King of Queens' reunion. Erinn took to Twitter to express her gratitude for the experience. "It's true, I've been let go from the show," she wrote. "But I had an incredible time during Season 1 and I want to thank all the amazing fans for their support." Leah, on the other hand, was thrilled to join the cast. "When they asked me to do more episodes, I said yes without hesitation. Working with Kevin is such a privilege," she said.
