Queen Elizabeth Opens Up About The Challenges Of Wearing A Crown

Queen Elizabeth Shares "Disadvantages" of Wearing a Crown

Let’s be honest, folks, who wouldn’t trade places with Queen Elizabeth for a day? But after hearing her recent interview for the upcoming documentary The Coronation on the Smithsonian Channel, we’re starting to rethink that idea. Turns out, wearing a crown isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In this rare glimpse into royal life, Her Majesty revealed some unexpected downsides to donning the iconic headpiece.

In her candid chat, the Queen shared that crowns, while symbolic and majestic, come with their fair share of challenges. “There are some disadvantages to crowns, but otherwise, they’re quite important things,” she said. She went on to explain the practical difficulties of wearing such a heavy accessory. “You have to angle the speech up when reading it because if you looked down, your neck might snap. It could literally fall off!”

The Crown's History and Weighty Legacy

During the documentary, the Queen reminisced about the crown her father, King George VI, wore during his coronation in 1937—the very same one she wore during her own coronation in June 1953. Reflecting on the historic piece, she noted, “I’ve been part of one coronation as a spectator and another as the recipient, which is quite extraordinary when you think about it.” She also highlighted the crown’s evolution over time. “Look at how much smaller it is now, right? It used to be taller. When my father wore it, it came up to about here,” she demonstrated, pointing to the height difference with her hands.

The interviewer, Alastair Bruce, remarked on the sheer weight of real diamond stones and how taxing they must be to wear on the head. The Queen nodded in agreement. “Absolutely,” she said. “Fortunately, my father and I share a similar head shape, so it fits well. Once you put it on, though, it stays put. It’s just a part of who you are.” This simple yet profound statement speaks volumes about the Queen’s dedication to her role and the symbolism behind the crown.

This revelation follows the Queen’s previous comments about her coronation coach ride being less than ideal. “It’s only sprung on leather, so it’s not very comfortable,” she quipped. While we might dream of royal glamour, it seems there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye.

Get Ready for the Coronation Documentary

The Queen’s new documentary, The Coronation, will premiere on Sunday, January 14, at 8 p.m. EST. According to Charlotte Moore, director of content at the BBC, “It is truly an honor to have Her Majesty The Queen sharing her intimate knowledge of the Crown Jewels and fond childhood memories from when her father was crowned King George VI.” She added, “Her words will bring the coronation ceremony to life for modern audiences to appreciate.” Trust us, you won’t want to miss this!
