Life is full of ups and downs, and sometimes, even the most successful people face their own personal storms. That's exactly what TV star and beloved meteorologist Ginger Zee has been through. In her candid memoir, Natural Disaster: I Cover Them. I Am One, Ginger shares her deeply personal battle with depression and the moment she hit rock bottom.

Ginger Zee's Struggle with Depression: A Personal Battle

In this revealing memoir, Ginger, who we know from Good Morning America, takes readers on an emotional journey through her life. At the age of 21, she reached a point where she felt completely overwhelmed by despair. She confided in People magazine, saying, "I’d lost all hope. I just shut down. It wasn’t worth living. I was wasting people’s time and space." In a moment of deep darkness, Ginger attempted to overdose on pills, but thankfully, her roommate and ex-boyfriend intervened and rushed her to the hospital. It was a turning point that led to her diagnosis with depression.

Depression isn't just a bad day or a fleeting sadness—it's a powerful force that can take over your life. Ginger explains, "Depression for me has been a couple of different things—but the first time I felt it, I felt helpless, hopeless, and things I had never felt before. I lost myself and my will to live." Her words are a powerful reminder that mental health struggles can affect anyone, no matter how successful they may seem on the outside.

At the time of her crisis, Ginger had just graduated from Valparaiso University in Indiana. Like many young adults, she was navigating the challenging transition from college to the real world. "It doesn’t matter what’s relative to another person’s tragedy, or whatever it is that’s making you feel low," she reflects. "In that moment, my brain, and probably a chemical somewhere within me, said, 'You need to kill yourself.' The only voices I could hear were telling me, 'You are not worth it.'"

What’s truly terrifying is how quickly those thoughts can take hold. Ginger recalls, "It’s very weird how that works. I didn’t question it. I didn’t sit there and think about it. I just went for it. It’s scary, the way your mind can overpower what is real and what is right." Today, as a mother, she has a new perspective. "Now as a mother, to think that that could be my child? That is frightening," she adds, her voice filled with emotion.

Thankfully, Ginger's story doesn't end in darkness. Today, she's a happy and successful woman who's found love and purpose. She's married to media personality Ben Aaron, and together, they have a nearly two-year-old son named Adrian. In August 2017, Ginger even revealed that she and Ben were expecting their second child. Her journey to healing has been supported by her loving family, and she credits her role as a mother for helping her overcome her struggles.

Ginger shares, "I’ve been lucky to find a husband who doesn’t judge my past. In fact, writing this book, he wanted more, which says a lot. He’s like, 'I want to listen. I want to be a part of that.'" She continues, "I’m now focused on not just myself, but on keeping my family happy and healthy. You have bigger things than [your own problems]. That has helped a lot—being a mother has helped incredibly."

Ginger's story is a powerful reminder that no matter how dark things may seem, there's always hope for a brighter tomorrow. Her honesty and vulnerability in sharing her struggles have touched countless lives and inspired others to seek help when they need it most.
