Jacintha Saldanha's Family Reflects On Her Legacy Years After Tragic Loss

Family speaks out 5 years after suicide of royal nurse who treated Kate

Hey there, friends. Today, we're diving into a deeply personal and emotional story that's been resonating with many. It's been five years since the heartbreaking suicide of Jacintha Saldanha, the late royal nurse to Kate Middleton. Her family is finally speaking out about the loss they've endured and the legacy they're building in her honor. In a candid interview with Australia’s WHO magazine, Jacintha’s 20-year-old daughter, Janice Pinto, and her 21-year-old son, Junal Barboza, open up about their ongoing grief and how they're finding ways to keep her memory alive.

Remembering Jacintha: A Mother’s Love

When it comes to losing a parent, especially under such tragic circumstances, the pain never truly fades. Janice, reflecting on her mother's daily routine, said, "The first few years were absolutely the hardest. You see, every evening at 6 p.m., Mom would call me before heading to work. It was her way of checking in, making sure I was okay. She'd always ask, 'How are you doing? How was school?' That phone call is something I miss every single day." The emotional weight of this simple routine is heavy, but it speaks volumes about the kind of person Jacintha was—a loving, caring mother who always put her family first.

Her son, Junal, echoed similar sentiments. "It's been all about perseverance, really. It's about finding the strength to keep moving forward, not just for ourselves, but for her. She'd want us to keep going, to live our lives with purpose." This perspective, while difficult to achieve, shows the resilience and determination within the family to honor Jacintha's memory.

Back in 2012, when Kate Middleton was pregnant with her first child, Prince George, she was admitted to London’s King Edward VII Hospital, where Jacintha was working as a night nurse. That evening, two Australian radio jockeys, Mel Greig and Michael Christian, made a prank phone call to the hospital. Pretending to be Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, they sought information about Kate’s health. Tragically, Jacintha, unaware it was a prank, divulged that the Duchess was suffering from Hyperemesis gravidarum. This revelation led to a media frenzy, and the guilt and shame Jacintha felt were overwhelming. Just three days later, on December 7, 2012, she took her own life.

    The Aftermath: Responses and Remembrance

When the news of Jacintha's death broke, the radio jockeys expressed their "deep sorrow" over what had happened. Prince William also reached out to Jacintha's family, penning a heartfelt letter expressing his and Kate's grief. He wrote, "We were both very shocked to hear about Jacintha, and have been thinking a lot about her recently. Many of the nurses in the hospital spoke highly of her, and I’m sure you know how great a nurse she was." Words like these underscore the respect and admiration Jacintha garnered from those around her.

Honoring Jacintha: A Legacy Lives On

Fast forward to today, and Jacintha's husband and children are honoring her memory by establishing a hospital in Mangalore, India. This project is close to their hearts. "My dad’s idea is truly incredible," Janice shared. "She always had plans to open a nursing home or do something for the elderly or the sick. This is exactly what she would have wanted." Junal added, "She was the kind of person who would go above and beyond to help anyone in need. We've even received letters from medical professionals praising her skills and dedication." It’s heartwarming to see how her family is keeping her spirit alive through this meaningful initiative.
