Hey there! You won’t believe what John O’Hurley had to say during an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly. The beloved actor, who hosted Family Feud from 2006 to 2010, opened up about why he decided to step down. Today, the show is thriving under Steve Harvey, but John’s take on his time in the spotlight is nothing short of fascinating.
Let me break it down for you. John O’Hurley said, “I had an absolute blast hosting Family Feud. But you know what? Every good thing has to come to an end. When I left the show, I felt like I’d done my part. It was starting to feel a little repetitive—like a never-ending penis joke, if you catch my drift.” He made these comments during a Facebook Live session while promoting his latest film, Swing Away. John went on to explain, “The show was evolving, and it was becoming less about family and more about how far you could push the boundaries. That wasn’t my style, and it wasn’t what I wanted to be a part of. I had my moment, and it was fun while it lasted. But I’m not the guy who wants to force something that’s no longer fresh.”
John’s Take on Watching His Own Work

Here’s the thing: John O’Hurley admitted that he doesn’t even watch Family Feud anymore. But guess what? That’s not unusual for him. “I don’t watch anything I’ve done, and that includes Family Feud. I make a conscious choice not to watch my own work because, let’s be honest, I’m not my own entertainment. For me, the joy is in the doing, not in the revisiting. Watching myself would just lead to overthinking—‘I should have turned my head that way’ or ‘I need to be sharper.’ That kind of self-criticism doesn’t sit well with me,” he said.
John continued, “I don’t want to be the kind of actor who sits around micromanaging every little detail of my performance. That’s not fun for me. I’d much rather let the moment happen and let the energy flow through me. If people enjoy it, great. If they don’t, well, I’ve had my fun doing it. And you know what? People still stop me all the time in airports and shout, ‘Peterman!’ So, if a thousand fans can’t be wrong, I must be doing something right.”
One Celebrity Match-Up He’d Love to See
Now, here’s something interesting. John revealed that there’s one celebrity match-up he would have loved to see during his time on Family Feud. “Can you imagine Bryan Cranston going head-to-head with Peter Bergman from Young and the Restless? Those two are some of the savviest actors I’ve ever worked with. It would have been electric. I think they’d have been so competitive that they’d end up duking it out in the parking lot after the show,” he joked.
