Hey there, folks! You might’ve heard the news by now, but let’s break it down. In a candid chat with Closer Weekly, beloved Seinfeld star John O’Hurley dropped some serious thoughts about the iconic sitcom. Guess what? He doesn’t think Seinfeld would cut it in today’s world. And no, we’re not holding our breath for a reboot anytime soon.
John O’Hurley Spills the Beans
So, here’s the scoop. John O’Hurley opened up during a Facebook Live session while promoting his latest flick, Swing Away. He shared some pretty insightful thoughts about why Seinfeld might not thrive in 2017—or really, in today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world. Here’s what he had to say:
“Seinfeld was all about celebrating the quirky irresponsibilities of young people back in the day when being carefree was totally acceptable. But let’s face it, things have changed. Not only that, but cell phones would’ve completely changed the game. They weren’t part of Seinfeld's universe, and that’s what made it so special. The show was all about real human interaction—whether people were connecting or disconnecting. It was raw, authentic, and relatable. In today’s world, where everyone’s glued to their screens, I don’t think it would pack the same punch.”

Why Seinfeld Was Different
John went on to explain that Seinfeld was deeply rooted in genuine communication. Whether characters were face-to-face, sharing heartfelt moments, or just awkwardly avoiding each other, the essence was in the human connection—or lack thereof. He added, “In the cell phone era, it’s too easy to replicate those moments digitally. The charm of Seinfeld lay in its authenticity. When the show ended, it felt like the end of an era. The day the music died, if you will.”

Staying Connected with the Cast
But don’t worry, John hasn’t lost touch with his fellow Seinfeld crew. In fact, he keeps pretty busy with his own projects, like Chicago: The Musical on Broadway and his one-man show on tour. He joked, “Jerry Seinfeld and I often cross paths, either the day before or after my performances. I always leave a pair of dirty socks in the drawer for him. Shh, don’t tell him I said that!”
John’s currently shining bright in Swing Away, which he describes as “one of the most visually stunning films I’ve ever worked on.” And if you’re tuning in for the National Dog Show on Thanksgiving Day, guess who’ll be hosting? That’s right—John O’Hurley!
