Giuliana Rancic's Secrets To Balancing Work And Family Life

If there’s one person who knows a thing or two about juggling work and family life, it’s Giuliana Rancic. As the mom of a five-year-old son, Duke, Giuliana doesn’t just clock in at E! for red carpet events—she’s also a best-selling author, fashion designer, restauranteur, and winemaker. At 43, her schedule is packed tighter than a holiday suitcase. But here’s the thing: she wouldn’t trade it for anything. She loves what she does, and that passion fuels her ability to balance her demanding career with her role as a mom.

How Giuliana Rancic Navigates the Work-Life Balance

In October, when Giuliana teamed up with the NFL for their Homegating campaign, Closer Weekly caught up with her to learn how she pulls off this almost-mythical balance between work and home. "When the NFL calls, I pick up!" she told Closer exclusively. "I love the idea of Homegating, where you can bring the excitement, rituals, and traditions of tailgating into the comfort of your home. I’m all about that. Plus, fashion and decor are my jam, so collaborating with the NFL to come up with fun Homegating ideas was pure pleasure."

    Passion as a Guiding Principle

Here’s a tip for all the moms out there: when deciding whether or not to take on a project that might pull you away from family time, ask yourself if it’s something you truly love and feel passionate about. If the answer is yes, then it’s probably worth it. Of course, Giuliana is lucky enough to choose her projects carefully, but she also has to work like the rest of us. And let’s be real—balancing a full day at the office with a family waiting at home isn’t easy. But Giuliana has figured out her system, and it works for her.

“Women are busier than ever these days. We’ve got so much going on, but I’ve learned to compartmentalize,” Giuliana explained to Closer. “When I’m at work, I’m fully focused on work. When I’m home, I’m fully present with my family. When I’m with Duke, I don’t look at my phone. I’m 100% engaged. Whether I’m with my family or at work, I give it my all. I don’t sit at my computer making photo albums—I’m focused on the task at hand.”

Giuliana also emphasizes the importance of giving your full attention to whatever you’re doing at the moment. “When you’re at work, give it 100% of your time and energy. Don’t chat with friends, scroll through social media, or shop online. Just work. That way, when you get home, you don’t feel guilty. You can say to yourself, ‘I put in a solid day’s work, and now I can focus on my family.’”

Of course, life doesn’t always go according to plan, and Giuliana knows that. “If Duke has a fever or my family needs extra attention on a particular day, I’ll still go to work, but I’ll make sure my family is my top priority,” she shared with Books for Better Living in 2015. “Or, if necessary, I’ll stay home from work. It’s all about flexibility.”

    Quality Time on the Weekend

Giuliana also makes it a point to spend quality time with her husband, Bill Rancic, and son on the weekends if the week was particularly hectic. “If I find myself working a lot during the week, I make sure the weekend is all about family. That’s how I make it work. And I don’t feel guilty about it! I realize it’s unrealistic to try to balance everything perfectly every single day. So I focus on either family or career each day, depending on what’s needed most.”

This kind of approach is golden advice for working mothers everywhere. So, moms, put those phones away, dive into your work, and give it your all. Then, when you’re home, be fully present with your family. It’s a win-win!
