The Chew Bids Farewell: Stars Share Emotional Goodbyes Amid Cancellation

'The Chew' hosts mourn show's cancellation to make room for more 'GMA'

It’s time to say a heartfelt goodbye to a daytime favorite. Just one day after ABC announced the cancellation of The Chew after seven successful years, the show's beloved stars opened up about the series' unexpected end. In a touching moment, Clinton Kelly broke the news to the audience during the Thursday, May 24 episode. “It’s an interesting day here at The Chew because most of you might have heard, some of you might not have, but The Chew has not been picked up for an eighth season—our seventh season is our last,” he revealed.

A Bittersweet Moment for Fans and Cast

As soon as Clinton shared the news, the audience responded with audible "boos," to which Clinton quickly reassured them, “It’s okay, it’s okay. These things happen.” He continued, expressing the genuine sadness felt by everyone behind the scenes. “The mood is a little somber around here to be honest. There are so many people who have worked tirelessly on this show, pouring their hearts into it, and we’re all going to miss this show very, very much. Today, we won’t be diving into trending topics or focusing on themes. Instead, we thought we’d spend this first segment talking about our feelings,” he explained.

Michael Symon Reflects on His Journey with The Chew

Host Michael Symon stepped in to share his heartfelt thoughts on the show's cancellation. “I can count on one hand the days I didn’t want to wake up at 5:30 a.m. and come to work. This has been the most enjoyable experience of my entire career, and it’s all because of you, our amazing fans. You’ve made this journey so special for us,” he expressed with gratitude.

Clinton then took a moment to acknowledge the incredible bond he’s formed with his co-hosts, Michael and Carla Hall. “About nine years ago, I made a personal vow to live my life guided by three principles: love, awe, and gratitude. I’m incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside you both for the past seven years. Beyond being talented chefs and great TV personalities, you’re both genuine, kind-hearted people. You truly embody the best qualities of humanity,” he said, his words resonating deeply with the audience.

ABC’s Official Statement on The Chew’s Cancellation

On Wednesday, May 23, ABC released an official statement regarding the cancellation of The Chew. “After seven remarkable seasons, 1,454 episodes, numerous Emmy nominations, and two Emmy Awards, The Chew will conclude production at the end of this season. The show will continue to air as planned until September, with all-new episodes premiering in June,” the network announced in a press release. ABC cited the immense popularity of Good Morning America as the reason for the decision, stating that expanding the morning show to a third hour presents a "great opportunity for viewers and advertisers." While acknowledging the bittersweet nature of the move, the network extended their gratitude to the entire cast and crew, applauding them for their incredible work and wishing them all the best in their future endeavors.

Challenges and Changes Along the Way

This difficult decision comes nearly six months after one of the show's original hosts, Mario Batali, was fired following allegations of sexual misconduct. Additionally, Daphne Oz left the program a year prior, leaving the remaining hosts to carry on without them. Despite these challenges, the show continued to thrive, thanks to the dedication of its remaining cast members. Although ABC hasn’t yet revealed details about the new third hour of GMA, they promised fans that it will include even more news, pop culture highlights, compelling interviews, and the program’s signature live events.

While the aftermath of Mario's departure may have been difficult to overcome, Carla Hall admitted to People that the show had become even more engaging as a result. "When you only have three people on the show, there's no hiding. Everyone has to be fully engaged, and we've grown closer because of it. Even during cooking segments, all three of us are actively involved. It's been so much fun raising the energy and working together as a tight-knit team," she said. We can't wait to see what exciting opportunities lie ahead for these talented individuals!
